I know this is cliché but the story with the guy that had 2 brothers commit suicide is part of what’s wrong with society today. For the longest time we never EVER gave full honors to Soldiers that committed suicide. What that means is that they weren’t posthumously given an award, promoted laterally or upwards, weren’t given burial honors (flag draped casket where the flag was provided by the DoD and a unit directed rifle detail plus the bugle, and officer presentation) however the family could request volunteers and sometimes they got a burial detail piecemeal but didn’t include the certificate. Suicide was treated as it’s deserved to be treated, which is the act of a person that is selfish, a quitter, someone that gave up and didn’t represent the true characteristics of an honorable Soldier, Sailor, Marine or Airman. But suddenly under Obama’s military it became honorable and full of glory. However it’s very dishonorable and disrespectful that these cowards gave up on their brothers and let them down in the middle of the fight. Instead of toughening their resolve they chose cowardice over courage. For whatever reason it became okay to self tap because somebody decided to view it as a form of mental disability. Coming full circle to the kid in this video, you can’t tell me that the brother who took his life after his older brother did, didn’t find some allowance inside himself due to the fact his older brother chose the coward’s way out. By saying it’s ok to quit, give up, hit your own off button…it cost that guy there 2 brothers, cost his mother and father 2 sons. Suicide isn’t okay. Never should be except for a very very very small extreme set of circumstances. We in society should never glorify it or make believe like it’s honorable. When one of my best mates decided to self delete, the first thing his wife told me after she told me what he did was tell me that me nor anyone else had better offer him an honorable military funeral because she didn’t want her daughter and son to see it and think it was ok or anything other than being a selfish and cowardly act. Loved the guy to death and we fought side by side many many days in Iraq, Afghanistan, other parts of the world. But I actually fear his wife and adore those kids enough that I told our Battalion Staff exactly what she said and why, and we abided exactly by her wishes. Don’t ever let the cowardly lion appear to be a tale of courage. One of our pilots had his helicopter shot down, it crashed and broke his back and one of his legs. While still in Iraq waiting for transport to Germany for the better quality hospital and medical care, he had to be informed that a drunk driver hit and killed his wife while she was running errands…that man never gave up on life and is still alive today. He wasn’t a cowardly lion when not many people could blame him if he’d have tapped out. Look at the people just in this video alone that face so much adversity and overcame it. Look for the lady, NightBirde, on America’s Got Talent that sang the song “It’s OK” whose body was fighting cancer for the final time but she still wrote and sang an amazing song with an amazing heart and talent. She was given a death sentence by her own body but she still kept fighting until the end. There are so many amazing people out here that most certainly have a reason to simply lay down and die, but choose to keep on fighting and keep on going hard at life. Very few problems you face in life are so big that you can’t keep digging and overcome them. Every single day that you continue the fight is another day you can spend with your kids, your siblings, your mom and dad, grandparents, friends, spouse, girl or boyfriend, a stranger that needs a smile or a stranger that can give you a smile. Stay strong and fight on.
